AGLC 4 and dual case cites

I am just starting out with Zotero.

I understand how to add a case to Zotero where there is a single cite e.g.: Genentech Inc's Patent [1989] RPC 147.

But the Federal Court practice note requires us to provide both the published report ( authorised series where available) and the medium neutral citation (MNC): e.g. [2002] HCA 59; 212 CLR 411.

The “solution” I am initially trying is to put the dual cite in Reporter Volume (and leave the other fields - Date and First Page - blank.

I am wondering if anyone has run into any problems with this or there is a better way of dealing with this?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
  • Teh translator for AustLII puts the medium neutral citation info in as 'Court' and 'Docket Number' and the AGLC citation script works well with that, if that is the only citation. I have been putting the authorised citation in the 'Reporter' field etc, but the citator mangles the two citations when inserting them into MSWord. I have posted about it and am hoping someone can fix the code.
  • Thanks, Grieth.

I wasn't aware there is an austlii converter.

As noted above, I just enter the report and the MNC in the Report Volume field with a short name in the Short Name field. That works fine for things like submissions with footnotes.
  • Thanks for your comment ipwars.

I have found that the AustLII translater works really well for me when capturing cases from the web page, populating all of the medium neutral citation data. It has been a great help to have a translator that automates so much of the process and downloads screen shots of the case text.

for inserting citations I found that the AGLC4 CSL didn't work properly if I had populated the fields for the authorized reports of the cases in addition to the Aust LII scraped medium neutral citation material. It has been frustrating me as I am well into a lengthy research piece (current draft over 80,000 words so a well automated process is important.

As the topic has few people interested I used Claude to modify the CSL for AGLC4 to fix the issues I had noticed. After several iterations it is working and I have loaded it into my Zotero installation. It still isn't fully compliant with the AGLC4 guide, but pretty good.

I am wondering where I should upload the revised .csl file for someone who knows what they are doing to look it over and see if it should replace the current version. As I am a lawyer who messes around with code I really don't know how to go about this. Any help would be appreciated

  • @grieth thanks for the heads up about the broken footnotes when you have both MNC and authorised report in the Zotero item! Just confirmed—that's annoying. Did you end up posting your updated CSL anywhere? I would be keen to check it out. I presume with AGLC5 around the corner there won't be an official update to the AGLC4 CSL.
  • Hi, I have uploaded my modified version here https://github.com/LawData-user/zotero-aglc4

I am not a programmer so it is not great work, but it is functional for me.

There is my attempt at a Jade.io translator on github, but I don't have the skills to make the changes suggested (or use github properly). So I just use my rough version of it and it works for me.

Hope this is some use to you.
  • Thank you very much! You prompted me to see what I could Claude 4.6 Code to do. The results are here: https://github.com/ybanens/AGLC4-CSL-with-Case-fix
