date range

I'm having a hard time figuring out how to conveniently indicate a range of dates. A range rather than an exact date is very common for artworks. For example, 1849-1856 will appear as "1856 1849" - reversed order and without the dash. Is there a way to input this so that it appears correctly with the dash, or at least in the correct order? Please let me know or link me if there is an existing discussion on this. Thanks!
  • Enter the dates in Extra like this:

    Issued: 1849/1856

    Or with day and month:

    Issued: 1849-03-01/1856-05-16
  • What about a range that has an opening date but no end date, as when the volumes have not all been published yet? CMOS 17 14.144 says to use an en dash after the first date and gives this example:
The Collected Works of Hayek, F. A., edited by Bruce Caldwell. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1988–.
I tried issued: 1988/ but that returned just 1988
  • Hi, John,

    have you tried entering

    date:"1988-"

    or

    issued:"1988-"

in the Extra field? It has worked for me.
