iPad only partially syncing

I was able to add three items to my online Zotero library from Zotero iOS, and iOS and MacOS synced correctly, but the three items were not syncing onto my iPad. I tried dragging down the list of all items in iPad Zotero to force a sync, but nothing happened.

(Note that these items were lone PDFs. It was *not* the case that I was merely having PDF file attachments not being downloaded for items that had correctly synced. Rather, nothing synced.)

I came back ~6 hours later, and *one* of the items had synced to my iPad. I then followed these "Changes Not Syncing" instructions.

https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/changes_not_syncing

In particular:

(1) I enabled error logging on desktop,
(2) I added a new item using desktop Zotero, specifically a webpage item that can be found in my online Zotero library here: https://www.zotero.org/jessriedel/items/HKSNA36S/attachment/ZLFP4RAT/reader
(3) I synced the desktop Zotero.
(4) I checked my online Zotero library and confirmed the item had synced.
(5) I opened my iPad Zotero and forced a sync.
(6) I found that the *new* item had synced (the webpage item), but the two missing items (the lone PDFs) had not synced still.
(7) I filed my debug log and received Debug ID is D680614190.

I then repeated these steps, except with an arXiv paper item, and it again synced the new item correctly without syncing the two old PDF items. The debug ID is D1620487458.

Finally, I repeated these steps, except with a lone-PDF item added from iOS. This new item again synced correctly to iPad, but the original missing two lone-PDFs still had not synced. The debug ID is D745591860.

Thus in all cases when I was running the debugger, the new items synced correctly. But two of the original three items that prompted the problem still have not synced to the iPad.

The two items that refuse to sync can be found at these URLs in my online library:

I am running Zotero 6.0.37 on MacOS 14.7.1, Zotero 1.0.43 Build 295 on iOS 18.1, and Zotero 1.0.42 Build 294 on iPadOS 17.6.1
  • @jessriedel just to make things clear, when you refer to "Zotero iOS" and "iOS", which one is iPad and iPhone?

"I was able to add three items to my online Zotero library from Zotero iOS, and iOS and MacOS synced correctly, but the three items were not syncing onto my iPad." - you added an item from iPhone and MacOS and it didn't sync on iPad?

You provided Debug IDs from desktop client, but it would help if you could provide Debug IDs from iPad sync too.

Lastly, if you try editing one of those missing PDF files, does it appear on your iPad after sync? Try changing the title of one of those missing PDFs on Desktop or Web clients for example.
  • > when you refer to "Zotero iOS" and "iOS", which one is iPad and iPhone?

In my comment, whenever I say "iOS", I always mean from my iPhone. When I am talking about the iPad, I say "iPadOS". (So: In my comment I was always adding items to the library from my laptop or phone, not the tablet. I was only trying to get the tablet to sync.)

    > You provided Debug IDs from desktop client, but it would help if you could provide Debug IDs from iPad sync too.

OK, I didn't even know it was possible to do the debugging from the iPad app. I went to the settings menu and selected "Full Sync Debugging". This caused all the remaining items to sync correctly. The debug ID is D527195930. So this fixed the problem for me.

Note: Just before I tried full-sync debugging, I had instituted a forced sync by going to the top-level of my library and dragging down on the items to get the sync spinner. That did *not* fix the issue. But full-sync debugging did. Would it be worth investigating what the difference between these two actions is, besides error logging? That might point to the root bug.

Also, since this fixed the issue for me, maybe it's worth adding "Full Sync Debugging" as a suggestion to the "Changes not syncing" page (at least until the root bug is diagnosed)? https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/changes_not_syncing

    Thank you for your assistance.
  • I have also tried to replicate the original problem by adding lone-PDF items to my Zotero library from iOS, but they all keep syncing correctly now. So unfortunately I cannot figure out a way to replicate the original problem anymore.
