removing automatic tagging

I have followed the guidance to prevent ZOTERO from automatically tagging my items
"uncheck “Automatically tag items with keywords and subject headings” in the General pane of Zotero preferences."
However, it is still adding tags to my imported items.
Any ideas on why?

    That setting applies to saving from the Zotero Connector, Add Item by Identifier, Retrieve Metadata, etc.

    If you're importing from files (RIS, BibTeX, etc.), you'll still get tags, because there's no distinction between automatic and manual tags in those file types. There are just tag fields.
