Finding other metadata based on author and title

Is there a way to do retrieve all other available metadata of an item for which we have only the author, title, and date within Zotero? Calibre, for instance, has such a plugin, which suggests this should be technically feasible. Thanks!
  • Some version of this is planned, but nothing currently available.
The DOI manager add-on does find DOIs for items for which they are available from crossref, which makes a semi-automated version of this (something like: find DOI, export DOIs, search by identifier, merge duplicates) easier. That'd obviously require that those items have CrossRef DOIs, though.
  • You could also search the title in zbib.org and then export any found item from there (though this wouldn’t be much faster than searching in Google Scholar probably).
  • @bwienik -> was aware of zbib.org and use it a bit, but never made the mental connection that it allows for title searches using crossref - I guess its crossref ...
The Zotero "PC" version has the well known magic wand to add citations via DOI, PMID ...; it also uses crossref - I guess its crossref ... Kind of strange that title searching via magic wand has never been implemented; wondering if this is some strategy thing or just simply no developer time?
And: ah it would be great if meta-data updating, especially a "find the missing DOI" function via other available meta-data e.g. title, author combinations could (finally) be implemented natively. Its a bit of a bummer that one has to export -> do some Python thing via e.g. https://stackoverflow.com/questions/61850966/getting-doi-from-article-title -> reimport ...
    Cheers

The magic wand doesn't really "search", it mostly retrieves 1 single record based on a unique identifier. If you want to search, it simply works better to use a platform that does it well and capture the metadata from there using the browser connector.

This being said, I'd be overjoyed to have metadata updates in Zotero :-)
  • Yep, your correct. I didn't mean search as in search for many. The wand is magic just for one specific item ... Nonetheless, zbib.org does "find" the metadata for the one title you plug into it; Zotero's wand wants numbers only.
