logic behind highlighting in-text bibliographic references

Hello! Is there any documentation as to how highlighting in-text bibliographic references in the pdf viewer works?

    e.g. how the names are identified in the text and how they are matched with the bibliography entries. It works rather well and I'd like to understand how it is done.

    It extracts the references section, splits it into individual references, and then attempts to match them within the text. This feature will be significantly enhanced in future versions of Zotero. Since Zotero is open source, this functionality is also part of the open-source code.
