Using the citation insertion plugin in Word (zotero 7)

It is impossible to work with the insertion of citations from the Zotero plugin in Word. It takes forever, doesn’t open, or you have to click multiple times. Any solution, or do I have to switch to Mendeley for good?
  • We are here to help you in good nature, but ultimatums will make it harder to get a good response. See https://www.zotero.org/support/forum_guidelines#etiquette

    We have a few changes in the pipeline to be released soon that fix some regressions for citation dialog slowness that got introduced in Zotero 7. Which OS are you using? Could you describe in more details what the issue is? See Reporting Problems.
  • When the file is too large (800 pages), it becomes very complicated to work with, but this doesn't happen with smaller files. Therefore, it's a problem with large files.

    The citation insertion window takes about 30-40 seconds to appear, which means each citation takes me about a minute. I have automatic citation updates disabled, and both Office and Zotero are up to date.

    I sincerely believe that the Word plugin needs a thorough review. Is there anything that can be done?
  • The Word plugin is under constant review to make sure it runs as fast as possible. You did not answer my question about the OS nor did you post a Report ID.

    We will push out another fix that will speed up the citation dialog in Zotero 7.0.7 on Word for Mac. If you can't wait, you can try testing it in the Zotero Beta.

    Either way if you have automatic citation updates disabled, the citation dialog should only take a long time to load after restarting Zotero once, and then it should be faster for subsequent edits as long as you keep Zotero open. If you're not seeing this, produce a Debug ID from the Zotero Beta (linked above) for an attempt to insert a 2nd citation in the document without restarting Zotero.
  • My operating system is macOS Sequoia 15.0, recently updated, but it also happened in Sonoma. I don’t have an error report, but my version is 7.0.6.

    Unfortunately, disabling automatic updates and restarting Zotero did not resolve the speed issue.

    Thanks.
  • No, what I am saying is that after restarting Zotero the first interaction will take a long time (because Zotero has to get all citations from that document), after which subsequent citation insertions should be pretty fast as long as automatic citation updates are disabled. Are you not seeing this?
  • I understand what you're saying;

    I restart Zotero, open preferences, and disable automatic citations, but the dialog box still takes a long time to appear. Even the system preferences take a long time to load.
  • Sorry for my mistake, I didn’t check that after restarting Zotero, the automatic updates are marked by default again.
    Can't automatic updates be disabled permanently?

    Now it works perfect! But why are the citations underlined? Can I disable that
  • Perfect!! Thanks.
