Can not save PDF on IEEE website in chrome

Recently, I can not use the save pdf button in chrome on IEEE pdf viewer, the save PDF button still shows PDF icon

But when I click on the button, nothing happens. If I right-click on button and choose Save to Zotero (PDF), it only saves the webpage.

This is an example link of the pdf file (open access):
https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/stamp/stamp.jsp?tp=&arnumber=9919149

This also happens if I use this function in Edge. However, it works in firefox.

My debug ID is: D2116806944

Does anyone know how to solve it?
Thank you

Thanks. A couple different issues here:

    1) It looks like there's a bug saving PDFs within frames in the latest Zotero Connector for Chrome and Edge. We'll push out a fix for that shortly.

    2) The IEEE Xplore translator wasn't written to work on PDF URLs, which is why you were seeing the PDF icon to begin with. While saving metadata from PDF URLs isn't something we can always support, we can here, so I've pushed a new version of the translator that enables that. Your Zotero should auto-update within a few minutes, or you can update translators manually from the Advanced pane of the Zotero settings, and then you should see the journal-article icon instead and it should say "Save to Zotero (IEEE Xplore)" when you hover over the save button.

Note, though, that you're trying to save from the PDF URL. While we're always grateful for reports of when that doesn't work, on supported sites like IEEE Xplore you should generally try to save from the article page. That would've continued to work here.
  • Thank you so much for your support. It works now.

Regarding your second point, I prefer to use save PDF and then Zotore can retrieve the metadata automatically (it's a great functionality) to obtain the original article URL, because I use IEEE via the proxy. In particular, the article URL via proxy has the type of "ieeexplore-ieee-org.proxy.bnl.lu/...", hence when I save it on the article page, the the URL in metadata of the paper is save as "ieeexplore-ieee-org.proxy.bnl.lu/.." rather than the original URL, i.e., "ieeexplore.ieee.org/..."

That shouldn't happen if your proxy is correctly configured in the Zotero Connector preferences. This should generally be automatically detected, but if it's not for you (or you disabled the functionality) you'd want to configure it yourself.
  • Actually, it should unproxy the URL even without a proxy being configured in the Connector. Can you provide a Debug ID from the Zotero app for reproducing that?
  • @hungnkha: And from the Connector too. Be sure to reload the page before trying to save.
  • @dstillman: Hello, my debug ID is: "D974225509"
And sometime when I click Save to Zotero button, it show only save the metadata not the pdf, like this

Sometime it can detect pdf file, like this

Maybe you can see it in the debug log for this reproducing time.

  • That's from the Zotero Connector. How about from the Zotero app (again for reloading the page, saving, and getting a proxied URL in the URL field)?

Same problem here: very rarely does the connector succeed at the 1st attempt to create the entry, most of the time it needs 2 or even 3 attempts. Sometimes it just creates a website entry (sometimes without even the snapshot!), sometimes an article without attachment, and sometimes it finally is able to create add the attachment as well. Below an example of 4 different entries created from pressing the connector on the same IEEEXplore article.

Any ideas on how to "increase the success rate" of the connector?
    Thanks in advance!

P.S. The "Find full text" option to find & attach the PDF doesn't seem to work at all with IEEEXplore.
