Double-numbering in bibliography

I have having trouble with double-numbering appearing in my bibliography (screenshot attached).

I've tried selecting the text and turning off numbering, copied/pasted the text into a new document, and changed the export style to see if that makes a difference but the double numbers keep appearing.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide!

  • What word processor version, what citation stye, and how are you generating the bibliography? Can you reproduce this in a new, empty document?
  • Thank you!

    - Word for Mac (Version 16.88)
    - National Institute of Health Research style
    - Using the Zotero plug-in
    - If I create a blank document the duplicate numbers do not appear, but need to use the existing document.
  • Is that document using a template in Word? If the template enforces numbering in the bibliography section, I can see things duplicating.
  • Is it possible to edit the existing document to remove enforcement of numbering? I've copied the text into a new document but there must be embedded formatting that carries over, as the duplicate numbering is still occurring.
  • Does changing to a different citation style and back fix it?
  • I've tried that and the same thing happens.

Answer @adamsmith 's question about a template. Were you provided a Word document to use (maybe with headers and footers already in place)?

Your comment: "- If I create a blank document the duplicate numbers do not appear, but need to use the existing document" makes me think this is the essence of your problem.

    Edit:

I did a quick Google search for NIH forms and templates and found many examples "required" by the agency. I called a colleague at my university's sponsored research office and learned that for some forms there is an imposed numbering system for "Literature Cited". My colleague didn't know how to cope with this when using a personal bibliography management program other than EndNote. I don't have faith that this person truly knows the ins and outs of software but only about submission protocols and deadlines for the agency and university. so, take the EndNote comment with a grain of salt.
  • Thank you so much for all of your help! I think we will just manually fix the bibliography to remove the duplicate numbering before we submit the proposal. I will note this for future reference so we avoid the problem in the future.
