Text entered after citation becomes part of citation

Greetings all,

I've become frustratingly aware that as I am working with my first document using zotero v2.0b7.4 with OpenOffice on OSX10.4.11, the text that I enter after inserting a citation somehow is considered part of the citation. The effect is that when I go to insert the next subsequent citation, a zotero dialog pops up inquiring whether I want to "Replace this zotero fied?" The choice is either OK or cancel, and if I respond OK, all the text that was entered since the last citation, as well as the last citation, is replaced with the newly requested citation. (I hope I've been clear enough)

Adding to the bewilderment is that this hasn't happened with the 20 or so citations that appear earlier in the document, and I can't think of what I've done recently to alter either my behavior, the zotero settings, or those of any of the other Firefox add-ons. I've tried some of the suggestions from the troubleshooting page (copy/paste doc, etc.) and ended up sending an error report (251274926).

If anyone can provide some much needed assistance to correct this situation, I will be extremely grateful. Thank you for you time and consideration.

Slánte!

Brian
  • this happens sometimes with Open Office - though I'm surprised you didn't notice that all of your text was highlighted in dark gray?
I believe this only happens if you use your mouse to go to the end of a citation and then start writing from there. If you just insert a citation and type (or press space) you won't see this behavior).

When you next see this behavior, the simplest fix is press return after the citation, insert one space, then use the back arrow to go back one space, then use backspace (which will get you back to the citation) and use the forward arrow to get one space away from it. You'll then have non-highlighted text. This may sound compllicated but is really a matter of 10secs - plus it's rarely necessary.

As for the text that's already part of the citation, my suggestion would be to copy it and paste it to a text editor that doesn't support formatting (I believe that's TextEdit on OS X), delete it in your word document and then paste the non-formatted text back in.
  • Thanks much for the tips! and no, as a matter of fact, there is no color difference indicating highlighted text, but I believe I get the gist of what you describe. Sounds like it's putting a buffer between the citation and the subsequent text. It's curious why the action of the carriage return effectively resets the situation. Oh well, as long as there's a get-around! Thanks again - brian
  • are you using bookmarks or reference marks (check using the document preferences button)? I'd strongly suggest the latter - those should have highlighting, though I'm obviously not sure for Mac.
