No matter whether it is downloaded automatically in the browser or dragged in, it will not be renamed. However, the document name in the file directory will be renamed automatically.Thank you very much.

  • Thank you, I see. It's like a new teacher has got a roster of class students, and each student's name is "NAME". Of course, the teacher knows that each student's real name is different, but the names on the roster are really the same. Now zotero's naming rules give me a similar split and strange feeling.

No, it's really not like that — it's just telling you that that's the PDF for the item whose metadata is shown directly above in the items list. The "names" are all visible in your screenshot.

And as the linked page explains, Zotero has — for the entirety of its existence — saved attachments from the web with titles like "SAGE PDF Full Text". It sounds like you were doing something that caused those to be overwritten to match the filename, but this has always been Zotero's design. Zotero 7 just changes some behavior to avoid overwriting the title in more situations to be more in line with that design.
  • Just a thought: could the number of confused users be evidence for the design choices?
  • Yes, we think the fact that Rename File from Parent Metadata before Zotero 7 mistakenly overwrote the default attachment title and set it to the filename caused a huge amount of confusion about the difference between the title and the filename and resulted in people getting in the habit of manually running that command on every new attachment without understanding that their files were already being renamed.

In Zotero 7, we've made changes to help people avoid that tedious, unnecessary step and to retain the actual benefit of attachment titles — a cleaner items list and less-distracting search results.
