Add Citation = Crash of Zotero 7 with LibreOffice Writer (24.2.5.2)

edited August 13, 2024
Since the update to Zotero 7 (which I was excited for an looks great) I am no longer able to add a citation to a document. This is on Fedora Linux 6.10.3-200fc40.x86_64

1. Zotero 7 open in the back ground
2. Writer open, position curser
3. Add Citation
4. Zotero crashed after 1 sec
5. Reopen Zotero & informed there are 2 instances open
6. Need to force Zotero to end

The only information I can get from the crash is 'zotero-bin shutdown by SIGSEV'. Restarting either program does not fix, rebooting the machine does not fix. Another forum fix suggests update of java and it is already updated. I have tried removing and re-adding the Writer plugin, I have also disabled all addons in Zotero from the older version (in fact it disabled them all when it updated automatically).

Machine is properly updated and everything else is working, this is the only issue I have, and each program works independently of one another perfectly and just wont talk to one another.

Is there a way to revert to the old version as I am in the middle of a huge Masters thesis and require a working citation manager? I am getting a little desperate, if anyone has any ideas I really would appreciate the assistance.
  • Can you generate real-time debug output for the crash and email it to support@zotero.org with a link to this thread?

Zotero 6 is still available on the download page, so if that works, you can switch to that to continue working. We may have other questions for you later for troubleshooting this.
  • Sorry I am not that technical and I am unable to get this to work for me to create a debug output.

The download page shows a tarball only for Zotero 6 so I am unsure how to proceed and I shall have to do a lot of research as DNF or the Software manager will not use this file, and there is no way to 'revert' using the software package manager
  • I have exactly the same problem, and I don't know what to do.
  • I have tried using the logging built into Zotero and it crashes the logging before it can complete a log file for me to look at or report. When I search DNF for installed packages 'Zotero' (or variations) do not show up yet my SPM has Zotero installed from Flatpack

I do not know what else I can do, and if it is not showing in DNF then I can not go back to the older version?!
  • The *ONLY* information I can get is from the 'report errors' built into the program and it only shows the following...

    =====================
    1723588851156 addons.xpi WARN Checking /app/share/zotero/distribution/extensions for addons

  • Looking in the error logs for Fedora there is nothing other than the message

    'zotero-bin killed by SIGSEGV - org.freedesktop.GnomeAbrt'

and when it tries to report the error there are no error files (prob because Zotero crashes even before it can log an error (?) and I dont know what to do

I have found an old Zotero6 .deb package but software package manager wont open it and I cant install it. When I search DNF for Zotero it does not show up so I cant search for duplicates to revert to Zotero 6

Anyone else have any other ideas?

If I cant get this fixed I have no idea how I will be able to recover all the research and complete this masters in the next couple of months
  • **SOLUTION FOUND** ...for the moment at least, as I have installed via Flatpak

I have used the instructions on the following page:

    https://itsfoss.com/downgrade-flatpak-packages/

to revert to Zotero 6 and everything has been sorted for the moment. But I still have no solution for the problems with Zotero 7. I wish I had more knowledge to assist or even more time to assist
  • We have nothing to do with the Flatpak. Can you reproduce this with the Zotero 7 tarball available from our site?
  • Simply put, no. I do not have the technical ability to install from tarball, sorry.

OK, then I'm afraid we can't help you here. We can only provide support for the official tarball and the zotero-deb package. For problems with other third-party packages, you'd need to ask the package maintainer. The Flatpak in particular is a sandboxed package, which can interfere with normal Zotero functionality in various ways.
  • SOLUTION (Workaround)

    1. Install Flatseal (as Flatpak from e.g. Fedora App Store)
    2. In Flatseal, search for Zotero
    3. Under Socket, disable "Wayland windowing system"
    4. Restart Zotero and LibreOffice
