I can't add footnotes.

edited July 25, 2024
In word, I am trying to add footnotes in this style 'author date: page' with no luck.

In the Zotero plug in tab, I click 'add/insert citation' and I am using styles that *I think* use footnotes, like Chicago Manual of Style 17th edition (note), but they only do in-text citations. I don't know if I should see a different option in the tab, or if there is a different style to use, or something else to try, but any help much appreciated....
  • You are using, as the name suggests, a "note" style.

    You have 3 options:
    1. Manually add the footnotes and insert your author-date citations there manually.
    2. Take the Chicago author-date style, edit it so it behaves like a note styles (fairly easy to switch code wise).
    3. Take the Chicago note style and edit it to your required format.
  • CMoS Note should certainly insert footnotes. My best guess is that you're setting the citation style in the wrong place -- it's set in the "Document Settings" of the Zotero word processor add-on.

If that's not it, could we see a screenshot of how an inserted citation looks in Word?
  • Thank you both.

adamsmith- your guess was correct, so I can now add it as footnote, thanks! I also managed to download World Politics, which is exactly the style I want.
