"Keep sources sorted" button not working

Hello,

The "Keep sources sorted" option isn't appearing when I click the "Z" button in the add citation dialog box. The only option that appears is "classic view" (screenshot attached).

Any idea why this might be the case? I'm using Chicago 17th author-date. This is an issue, as the order of the citations appears to be random.

Thanks,
Tom

  • Chicago author date doesn't sort citations (the manual gives authors a lot of liberty there, so would be tricky to implement any rule), so the option is absent.
  • Thanks @adamsmith, appreciate it.

    Is there a way that I could customize the style for this project to add this element in, e.g. sort them alphabetically? Just so there's consistency throughout the document. I'd imagine this would need to be done in the Style Editor, which I don't have much experience with.
  • yeah, absolutely -- how do you want citations sorted? Alphabetically or chronologically?
  • Hi - just circling back after checking with the author. Chronologically would be ideal. Thanks so much!
  • Find
    <layout prefix="(" suffix=")" delimiter="; ">
    <group delimiter=", ">

    And add a sort section right before it so it reads

    <sort>
    <key macro="date-in-text"/>
    <key macro="contributors-short"/>
    </sort>
    <layout prefix="(" suffix=")" delimiter="; ">
    <group delimiter=", ">

    Read through the general instructions, in particular the section about changing title and ID https://www.zotero.org/support/dev/citation_styles/style_editing_step-by-step
  • Thank you!
