2.0b7.4: multiple instances of Firefox

I'm using Zotero with Firefox 3.5 and OpenOffice.org 3.1.0 on Windows XP. I recently installed the latest Zotero beta version 2.0b7.4.

On the positive side, I really appreciate being able to customise and modify the size of the interface for inserting citations. It is very convenient to be able to sort them by author and date instead of just by title. It would also be nice to have an option to hide or minimise the "My Library" section to make extra space on the screen and enable users to display the full titles of papers more easily.

However, it seems that since installing the new beta version, every time I try and insert a citation, Zotero launches a new Firefox browser window (not just a citation entry window), which is rather annoying because it causes a lot of clutter and presumably also increases the memory use of Firefox which is rather heavy on memory to begin with. Has anyone else experienced this, and is there any way to fix it?

It also seems that the latest beta takes a longer time both to start up and to enter subsequent citations than older versions did, but perhaps this is just associated with its opening multiple Firefox windows.

That is in fact possible - place your mouse cursor between the left and the middle column. It will turn into a two-sided arrow. You can drag that arrow to the left and at some point the left (My Library) column will vanish entirely.
Edit: Oh wait, you are talking about the Ooo plugin, right? Then never mind.

I've never heard of the behavior you describe concerning FF windows.
What is loaded in the new browser window? Is it just empty? After triggering that behavior can you send an error report?
(point 2. of the instructions here: http://www.zotero.org/support/reporting_bugs )
  • Re: the citation issue, do you have other Firefox extensions installed? The MinimizeToTray for FF 3.5 extension in particular is known to cause problems.
  • Hi adamsmith, thank you very much for your rapid reply to my comment.
I have sent an error report and its number is: 1126947281

Regarding steps to consistently reproduce the behaviour (creation of a new Firefox window), at the moment it happens every time I click on the "insert citation" or "edit citation" buttons of the Zotero toolbar in OpenOffice, so it doesn't seem to be a case of a rare bug but something to do with how things are configured on my system. I wonder whether it might be due to a conflict with some other Firefox add-ons? Has anyone ever reported such a thing before?

Re. the "My library" comment, yes I meant the OpenOffice plugin, not the Firefox one. It would be nice to have a similar two-sided arrow in the OpenOffice input window.

If I can supply any more detailed info that would help you in tracking down the origin of the issue, then please let me know.
  • Hi Simon, I think our comments must have crossed over. Yes I do have other add-ons installed, including MinimizeToTray.
  • I get the following "chrome://zotero" warnings in the in the Error Console of Firefox:

Warning: Error in parsing value for 'min-height'. Declaration dropped.
    Source File: chrome://zotero/skin/bindings/itembox.css
    Line: 72

Warning: Timed textboxes are deprecated. Consider using type="search" instead.
    Source File: chrome://zotero/content/integration/addCitationDialog.xul
    Line: 0
  • Those are irrelevant. Disabling MinimizeToTray should fix your problem.
  • You can use MinimizeToTray Plus - it works.
