Can't attach files through the provided menus any more

This has only started happening recently, as far as I can tell. I'm using Zotero 2.0b7.4 on Firefox 3.5.3 for openSUSE.

Basically, I can't attach copies of files or links to files from the provided menus. I can, however, still make snapshots from those menus; automatic attachment works where it's supported; and, in a final fit of testing, I found that navigating to the right directory in Firefox (using the file:// protocol) and dragging the file onto the middle pane of zotero works. Just not from the menus.

My hunch -- not that it's more than that -- is that this is somehow related to the recent behaviour of Firefox (perhaps only the openSUSE version) to use KDE features instead of GNOME ones, for example for the file selector or notification that files have been downloaded. But really I have no idea.

Any help is greatly appreciated!
  • Basically, I can't attach copies of files or links to files from the provided menus.
This isn't likely to be a Zotero problem, but you don't say what actually happens when you try.
  • I'm sorry: nothing happens. As far as I could tell, nothing even appears in the debugging log. Additionally, nothing happen when I drag files from Dolphin, the KDE file manager, but I'm not sure that ever did anything.
  • As in, you choose the menu option, and a file selection window never appears? If so, it's almost certainly a Firefox or distro bug. Do other file selection windows in Firefox (or other extensions) appear?
  • Sorry again: a file selection dialogue does appear, identical to the one that comes up when selecting where to save downloads. After double-clicking a file or typing it into the textbox, though, the file selection window closes and... nothing has changed.

Is there some other debugging log I could look at?
  • You can turn on debug logging from the Advanced pane of the Zotero prefs.
  • Thank you, but that log reveals nothing in this instance. I was wondering if there was another place I could look in to see why nothing happens.
  • Hello gfreeman82,

I have the same problem, using Zotero 2.0b7.4 on Firefox 3.5.3 for openSUSE.

Did you sort it out? Cheers
  • I didn't sort it out, but going directly to the directory containing the file in Firefox is a sufficiently good workaround for me. I think this is related to the openSUSE-exclusive enhancements to Firefox to use KDE components (see http://en.opensuse.org/KDE/FirefoxIntegration).
  • just to drop a line in this thread as well, i can confirm the same problem on opensuse 11.2, KDE and FF3.5.
