Filter (hide) users annotations and highlights in group library

edited June 11, 2024
Hi everyone,

Is there a way to hide annotations and highlights in a pdf that is part of a group library?

We are using Zotero pdf reader and it would be great to be able to access a "clean" version of the pdf.

I saw in this previous thread that one might be able to filter highlights by user, but I don't see any option to do so in my Zotero desktop app.

Here the previous post: https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/102696/highlighting-filter-in-group-library

And here a screenshot of my app:

Any suggestion?

Thank you
Cheers,
Enrico
  • Anybody able to help/comment on this?

    Thanks

  • Do you want to temporarily hide all annotations, or do you want a file without any annotations at all?

    Thank you for your comment.

Ideally, I would like to hide annotations (inc. highlights) made by other group members on the same document.
  • But you can filter your own annotations by selecting your username at the bottom of the annotation sidebar.
  • The problem is I cannot find the filter option in the annotations sidebar. See below:

  • It seems the filtering options disappear when all annotations are the same color and don’t have tags. We’ll fix that in Zotero 7.

If you change the annotation color, you will see the filtering options again.
  • I do indeed see the filtering when I change the color, or add a tag to any annotation.

Thank you very much for clarifying and for planning on fixing the issue! Much appreciated.
  • Hi hi. The quick fix of adding my own annotation with a different color helped.
Still looking forward to the update/fix in Zotero 7! Thank you.
  • @gclin It should already be fixed in Zotero 7.
  • Really? I couldn't find this fix. The only way I could turn off my collaborator's notes is by inserting my own with a different color like you suggested earlier in July. Otherwise, the filter option doesn't show up when I'm on the PDF view. I had just installed Zotero on my new laptop and was using the new one for this purpose, so it should be the newest version...
  • @gclin Can you make a screenshot of the full annotation sidebar?⬤
  • @martynas_b, sure.
Here's an example where I haven't put in my own color. There's no filter on the bottom:

Here's another example where I highlighted something small (per the July suggestion) and the options to select notes showed up:

  • Hi,

@gclin that is strange. It does work on my Zotero 7

  • Hmm @EnricoFucci, I think it worked because you have both commented/highlighted something. It worked when I've highlighted something. But it doesn't appear when only one user has added their annotation.
That is, if only one user has added the annotation, there is no way to turn it off from my version. But the good news is, I can turn it off by adding my own annotation and deselecting the users.
