Moving Zotero to USB and back again

Hi there,

I just started using Zotero a couple of weeks ago. I've done quite a bit of work on it. I began having problems with my laptop and eventually the laptop stopped working. But just beforehand, I think I exported the files to my USB. But as of yet I've been unable to open them on my PC...
They just come up on the USB as a series of files with numbers on them?
My laptop has been sent away to be fixed and I'm not hopeful of keeping the files on it, as it may need to a total reset.
Does anybody know anything that may be of help to me? I'm starting to worry, thanks.

  • Hi Rintze,
    I just tried that...it didn't work!
But I'm not sure I did it correctly, where is the current data directory?
    Any more tips?
    Thanks for your help.

You'll need to give a bit more detail then "tried that". We have no way of knowing what exactly you tried. We don't even know which files you have on your USB stick.
    Is there a file called
    zotero.sqlite ?
If so, copying that and the folder named "storage" into the new data directory should work.
If you don't have the .sqlite file (or some backup thereof). There is nothing you or we can do.

But I find it hard to believe that you'd lose all your files on a broken laptop. Actually wiping your hard-drive is quite a rare feat.

Edit: From the documentation above "Use the “Show Data Directory” button in the Advanced pane of your Zotero preferences to reveal the current data directory."
