Zotero unresponsive

Hi, I have been using Zotero for a year now without any problems. However, this morning when trying to start Zotero up, it says unresponsive and I am unable to click on anything within the extension. How do I manage to use it again without losing all the files I have saved?
  • See Reporting Problems. Provide step by step description of what you do and what happens.
  • Report ID: 1742125512

When trying to open Zotero it keeps loading and I am unable to click on anything.

    1. Start Zotero
    2. Zotero opens with an article I saved
    3. Unable to click on anything and gives the message "unresponsive"
    4. Uninstalled and re-installed
    5. Still does not work
    6. Tried Debugging, but cannot access help tab in Zotero
    7. Tried reporting startup error with "C:\Program Files (x86)\Zotero\zotero.exe" -ZoteroDebug
    8. Tried it with "C:\Program Files (x86)\Zotero\zotero.exe" -jsconsole
    9. The error console window opens
    10. Same error as with Zotero, keeps on loading
    11. Open cmd.exe
    12. Paste "C:\Program Files (x86)\Zotero\zotero.exe" -ZoteroDebugText
    13. Paste "C:\Program Files (x86)\Zotero\zotero.exe" -console

  • Have you tried restarting your computer? Do you have any proprietary security software running? Can you disable it temporarily and try opening Zotero then?
  • I did restart the computer a couple of times and there is no security software running on the laptop.
  • Try holding down Shift when starting Zotero to start in Safe Mode, and see if that makes a difference.

If not, when you say it opens with an article you saved, do you mean it's opening up a PDF reader tab, or just that it's showing you the items list?

If the former, close Zotero, go to your Zotero profile directory, and delete the session.json file, which will clear all tabs.
  • The Shift button worked!!! Thank you very much and have a good day!! <3
  • This means one of your extensions is causing this issue. You should figure out which one it is and report it to the developer.
  • To be clear, the main thing that does is disable your third-party plugins. The next time you restart Zotero, they’ll be re-enabled. You may need to re-enable them one by one to figure out which is causing the breakage.
