Parenthesis turns into bracket in footnote

Hi,

I am using the style UCLouvain - Centre Charles De Visscher pour le droit international et européen (French). There is an issue when someone adds a closing parenthesis as a suffix in a reference, such as "article 3 a)", the parenthesis becomes a closing bracket like this: "article 3 a]". It works fine when it's an "article-locator" but not when it's a suffix. This has been reported to me for documents and legislation so far.

I have seen a few posts about this problem, I have tried to edit my code but haven't been successful. I found this suggestion:

>Put the brackets in the group and not at the beginning and end of the two text variables and it works.

But I don't see where to make that change? The only spots where I have parentheses as prefixes and suffixes are in labels in the author macros.

This is the link to the style on Github: https://github.com/citation-style-language/styles/blob/master/uclouvain-centre-charles-de-visscher-pour-le-droit-international-et-europeen.csl.

Many thanks for your help!
  • Quick update: I have tested a reference with several parentheses in a row, like "article 3 a), 5 b) and 5 d)". Every other parenthesis becomes a bracket like this: "article 3 a], 5 b) and 5 d]". It seems to me like these are seen as closing punctuation alternating between nested parentheses.

Is there a place this can be changed in the style?
  • The parenthesis behavior is hard coded, but obviously this doesn't sound right. Does this happen with other (broadly similar) styles, too?
  • @adamsmith I can confirm that I am experiencing the same problem with a citation style designed for German law. This problem does not appear to be related to individual styles; rather, it seems to be related to Zotero's handling of footnotes in general.
