Zotero Integration Error

  • Can you provide a Report ID to start?
  • Hi,

    the Report ID is: 1626015999.
I purchases a new laptop with Windows 11. Before, I worked with Windows 10 on another laptop without problems. Now, when I want to insert a citation in Word I get this error notice on an old as well as on a new document. I already reinstalled zotero and the connectors. But zotero did not show in the word menue bar. So I copied the dotm file from zotero and pasted it to the start folder of word. Then zotero appeared in the menue in word, but it seems to be missing the connection.

    open zotero
    then open word
click in the text to insert citation
    click Add/Edit citation
    then error notice popps up.

    Thank you for your support!
  • Could you provide a Debug ID for an attempt to use the Word Zotero plugin?
  • Hi,

    this is the Debug ID:
    D97638431

    Thanks
  • Could you restart Zotero and Word, and capture another Debug ID? Make sure you don't press Zotero addon button in Word before starting to capture the Debug Log.
  • Good morning!
    Sorry, here's a new debug ID: D2070031409
  • What is the full version number of Windows 11 that you are running? Do you have any proprietary security software installed on this new computer?
  • Edition Windows 11 Pro
    Version 23H2
    Installiert am ‎12.‎06.‎2024
    Betriebssystembuild 22631.3737

    Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22700.1009.0

I believe that Win11 comes with some kind of security software. I downloaded the free Avira and my Acronis does also have some kind of security service.
  • You should start by disabling any proprietary security software like Avira, Acronis, or anything else and see if you can still reproduce the issue. You might need to restart your computer to fully disable the security software, or in some cases, even uninstall it.
  • Avira and Acronis deinstalled and restared the computer. Problem persists...
  • Could you create a new Windows user account on this computer and see if the issue persists there?
  • I created new Windows user account, gave that user full rights, opend zotero, but Zotero does not even show in the Word menu bar. Do I have to download another zotero App for that user too?
  • You have to install the Zotero plugin into Word for that user. This should generally work by going into Zotero Preferences -> Cite -> Word Processors and using the installation button. You will need to close Word for it to work. If it does not, you will have to manually install the plugin, although we would be interested in a Debug ID for an attempt to install it via Zotero Preferences, since it should really work in a new User Account with default settings.
  • On my new computer I don't have the option Word Processors, only on my old one.
  • I can only chose to use the classic view of the citations dialog.
  • The zotero word for windows integration is enabled, but toolbar does not show in Word.
  • You'll need to follow those steps and the platform-specific steps linked from there, and if you're still having trouble, let us know exactly what you tried, in your own words, and what happened at each step.
  • Now I installed another new user account. This time I opened a Microsoft account with it. With this account, registered at Microsoft, the button for the Word integration appeared and with this account the Zotero toolbar was there and it is possible to enter citations.

So with Win11 Zotero seems to not work if you register a local account. You are forced to use or open a Microsoft account. That's not so nice.
So what do I do with my existing original local account? Will I encounter a problem if I try connecting it with this newly opend Micros-account and delete the fake new user?
  • Zotero definitely works with a Windows 11 local account. You should follow the steps Dan linked to above, which specify what you should do if there is no button to reinstall the plugin on the account where it was not available.
  • I did exactly what was asked for, but now we start from the beginning again: I do have Zotero on the word menue but I can't enter a citation:
    Report ID: 889375420
  • Do you have a button in Zotero Preferences -> Cite which allows you to (re)install the Zotero plugin? If you do not, you need to follow the steps in the troubleshooting page. The button missing indicates that Zotero is failing to load the Word integration plugin for some reason.
