Word footnotes and Zotero references numbering not aligning

I am adding word footnotes in a document (which go to the bottom of the page - particularly to expand on concepts), as well as Zotero references. However, the Zotero references (and the number corresponding) aren't coinciding with the numbers from Word footnote i.e. I will have "1" for a reference and then just after I will have "1" for the word footnote (i.e. they are not numbering consecutively). Do you know how to fix this?
  • This should happen automatically. Notes inserted by Zotero for footnotes are actually just Word footnotes. All Zotero does is say to Word "Insert a footnote, I want to add some text in one".

You are actually using a footnote style and NOT a numeric citation style? (IEEE or Nature for example)
The numbers for numeric styles are different to footnotes.
  • So how would I align the numbers? (I am using Nature for Zotero)
  • I would recommend combining a numerical citation style with notes, but if you really want to, you should set Word to use Roman numerals for footnotes to distinguish the two, which very much shouldn't align. (damnation was referring to actual note styles like Chicago Manual)
