Performance Issues with Zotero App on iPad: Slow Response and Difficulty in Note-Taking

Hello,

Today, I encountered noticeably slow performance while using the Zotero app on my iPad. This lag particularly affects the process of making notes directly in PDFs, which is essential for my workflow. Previously, the app was fluid and easy to use, with no issues of lagging. However, the current sluggishness has made it quite challenging to work efficiently.

Has anyone else experienced similar issues recently? Any tips on how to mitigate this, or is there an update available that addresses this slowdown? Your feedback and suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I rely heavily on Zotero for my research.

Thank you!
  • I've been experiencing a similar issue on my iPad Pro, especially for large PDF files.
  • Hey @vitoria.monteiro and @jooko,
can you please try the latest beta, as it contains PDF reader performance improvements, and report back?
    Check here for details https://www.zotero.org/support/beta_builds#zotero_for_ios_beta
  • I'll just add to what mvasilak said, there's a new build 1.0.39 (278), so if you'd check that one out let us know whether it fixed things for you. Thanks!
  • @mvasilak and @micharlrentka
I just downloaded the iOS beta, and it seems to be working well! I'll report any issues if I find one. Thanks!
  • 1.0.39 is now available via the App Store, so you can switch back to the release version and leave the beta from the TestFlight app if you don't want to continue running the beta.
  • Zotero was also lagging a lot for me after I updated to iPad OS 17.5.1. I updated to the new version in the App Store and now the app feels amazingly fast again! Thanks to the maintainers for the great work!
  • A couple days ago I started having the same problem, but I'm updated to the latest Zotero version. iPadOS 17.5.1 and Zotero 1.0.39.

  • Hey @zotsozotso, can you please provide this info:

    - What were you doing exactly, i.e. which annotation type you created, did you use pencil or not, did you add a comment in the annotation, etc. You can even record a video and share a link here, or send it to support@zotero.org and mention this thread.

    - Does this occur with all documents, or specific cases, and if so which? E.g. very large PDF files, with a very large number of annotations? Something else?

    - Can you please record a debug log, and try to recreate this? By going to Settings > Debug Output Logging > Start Logging, then recreate the issue, and in the end go to Settings > Debug Output Logging > Stop Logging, and post the Debug ID here.
