Arxiv appears currently broken when saving directly from the PDF -- it works if you save from the landing page, which is also more generally where Zotero works most reliably: https://arxiv.org/abs/2406.07524
The landing page is no longer working for me on mac either - just downloaded most recent zotero and reinstalled plugin. Using Chrome on a mac. Any advice?
I have the same problem when trying to add articles from the arXiv landing page ("An error occurred saving with arXiv.org. Attempting to save using Embedded Metadata instead."). Sometimes (but not always) "save using Embedded Metadata" works but then the Inspire Metadata Updater fails.
Sorry, the above debug ID is from Zotero, not Zotero Connector. I repeated the process with debug output logging enabled in the Connector. The outcome this time was different. Now, https://arxiv.org/abs/2409.06766 was added correctly (as a preprint) but https://arxiv.org/abs/2409.06786 could not be added at all (I tried twice). Report ID: 510246047, Debug ID: D837825370.
You're just getting a timeout from arXiv servers. You can try disabling other browser extensions, but if it's working intermittently, it might just be a problem with arXiv servers, or you might be getting rate-limited if you've tried to save many items. This isn't a problem in Zotero itself.
I don't know how Zotero retrieves information from arXiv but I have no problem accessing arXiv manually (both landing pages and pdfs). There is indeed a rate limit "When using the legacy APIs (including OAI-PMH, RSS, and the arXiv API), make no more than one request every three seconds, and limit requests to a single connection at a time" (see https://info.arxiv.org/help/api/tou.html). However, the problem occurs every time I try to add something (with only one exception in the last couple of weeks).
For instance, I now tried to add two other papers using Zotero Connector, after waiting for an hour, without success. Adding the paper using the magic wand and arXiv identifier in Zotero works though. Thus, it seems like there's a problem with how the Zotero Connector retrieves information from arXiv and not a problem with arXiv.
We've released an updated arXiv translator that should be significantly faster. Thanks to Jonas Zaugg for developing the new version.
Your Zotero Connector should auto-update within a few minutes, or you can update manually by clicking Update Translators in the Advanced pane of the Zotero Connector preferences.
I have checked chrome version, connect version, zotero version. all have no problem. Can you help me further.

After a few trials, it seems arXiv's direct api is much faster than their OAI2 api, and returns essentially the same information:
* OAI (see @dstillman 's message above): https://export.arxiv.org/oai2?verb=GetRecord&metadataPrefix=oai_dc&identifier=oai:arXiv.org:2409.06786
* direct api: http://export.arxiv.org/api/query?id_list=2409.06786
Maybe arXiv will one day upgrade their OAI server, but till then, could there be a variant of the arXiv connector using the direct api ?

Works for me. But the translator doesn't work on the beta html view (https://arxiv.org/html/2409.03443v1)
