Zotero not updating document

Error report id 901641391

I have a large document in Word (version 2019 MSO). I am trying to adhere to the Russell Sage Foundation house style for books, which follows the Chicago Manual of Style 18th edition and uses endnotes with author-year format for citations.

I have been using a citation format called Citation Compass (Kildekompasset) - APA (note). I would like to switch to Chicago Manual of Style 17th edition (author-date) in order to bring in first names of authors. When I try to change the bibliography style, I am told that Zotero experienced an error updating my document.

I have: restarted Word, restarted Zotero, restarted my computer, checked for updates, checked that Track Changes is disabled, made sure I have no citations in images, cut and pasted the entire document into a blank Word file, resaved the document with a new name with no spaces in the name, tried other bibliography styles, made sure the language is set to English, and deleted and resaved the Zotero Word Processor Plugin.

At one point, it let me change the bibliography to a style I didn't want (Chicago Manual of Style 17th Edition Full Note) and then back to Citation Compass (Kildekompasset) - APA (note).

What do you suggest?
  • Switch from endnotes to footnotes first, then to the author date style (you can then switch back to endnotes).
Note, however, that the Chicago author-date style is a parenthetical in-text citation style. If citations are supposed to be in endnotes, that style won't work well, yo may want Chicago note or something like International Organization or World Politics which are CMoS-like with author-date citations in notes (Also the 18th edition of CMoS has been announced but not yet published.)
  • Thank you. Both of these approaches solved the error issue, but neither is the perfect fix. If I switch from endnotes to footnotes and then use Chicago author-date, it inserts in-text citations for about half of the citations, and I cannot automatically convert back to endnotes from footnotes for those. As you said.

International Organization and World Politics are better but they include full url's and access dates for journal articles and books, which we don't want.

Is there a way to modify one of these to adhere to the style that is required by RSF? We have a thirty single-spaced paged bibliography, so doing it by hand is a pain.
  • You'll want to request the right style then https://github.com/citation-style-language/styles/blob/master/REQUESTING.md#requesting-csl-styles
Check if the book style is the same as the one for the Russel Sage Journal (which we also don't have, but that makes it easier to look for examples).
