[7 Beta] Stuck on loading items screen

Running into an issue where, in regular mode, I am getting stuck on the "Loading items" page of the Library view. Sometimes, not all the time, it will go blank and then eventually say "An error has occurred. Please restart Zotero." The last time I received this error I reported it, with Report ID: 632060508.

I have also reported in the case of getting stuck on the "Loading items" screen, with Report ID: 1005691763.

Few things of note:
- The library issue does not appear to impede the functioning of any other aspect of Zotero. All my open tabs are still there and accessible, with no issues loading and reading through them.
- The issue goes away entirely when I run in Troubleshooting mode. To my knowledge, I do not have any plugins/extensions, so unclear why this makes any difference.

    Can you provide a Debug ID (different from a Report ID) for Zotero startup through this happening, using the "Restart with Logging Enabled…" option?

  • Have you subscribed to any feeds in Zotero? If so, could you post the URL(s) here, or, if you'd prefer, email it to support@zotero.org along with a link to this thread? You can copy the URL by right-clicking the feed in the left sidebar and selecting "Edit Feed...".

    Update in this saga: restarting in troubleshooting mode no longer works (as in, Zotero closes, but never reopens in troubleshooting mode). It appears that both issues may be related, in that both issues started immediately after having to force quit Zotero following it becoming unresponsive during regular use.

    Ahh, here's another interesting development.

    Now, when Zotero starts up, it results in a number of ".part" files being installed into my downloads folder.

    At some later point, I was again able to restart into troubleshooting mode. However, this time in troubleshooting mode, I am now running into the same issue as in regular mode: I'm stuck on the "loading items" screen.

    In either mode, I note that synchronization runs endlessly, and does not appear to ever succeed.

    Tried the ZIP version to see if that would make any difference - it did not.

    A summary of all issues encountered so far:

    Current build: 7.0.0-beta.77+adaa61f2c (64-bit)
    Running on Windows 11 (KB5036980)

    Sequence of issues encountered:
    - standard Zotero session freezes up, end up having to force quit through Task Manager
    - upon restart, get stuck on "Loading items"
    - restart again, this time into troubleshooting mode
    - works in troubleshooting mode for a few days, then
    Today:
    - troubleshooting mode freezes, causing me to force quit
    - restart into standard mode (still stuck on loading items), this time I see numerous PART files being downloaded into my Downloads directory upon Zotero startup
    - restart again into troubleshooting mode, this time, also gets stuck on "Loading items", also seeing the PART files being downloaded in this case
    - attempted to use the ZIP local application instead, encountered same issues
    - sometimes will fail to restart upon selecting "Restart in troubleshooting mode" or "Restart with logging enabled"

  • An update today: things appear to be working again after I closed several of my open pdf tabs, and restarted Zotero. Possibly a memory issue or something similar? I guess it would also somewhat explain why troubleshooting mode worked for a short while until it didn't (because I opened additional pdf tabs).

    I'll be sure to keep the number of pdf tabs open to a reasonable number going forward. Doesn't really seem like a bug in this case, so maybe instead can propose a feature request for a memory/[whatever the limiting constraint is] monitor of some sort?
  • These issues are unlikely to be connected, and I don't think any of them are related to memory limitations. PDF tabs are only loaded once they're actually opened, so having a bunch of PDFs open won't affect restarting. ZIP vs installer doesn't make a difference.
    • .part files in Downloads: It would be helpful if you could get a startup debug log for that (Help -> Debug Logging -> Restart with Logging Enabled...), but I think I have a pretty good idea of what's going on and we should have a fix out soon.
    • Synchronization running endlessly: We'd need a debug log for this too. Do note that your Zotero storage is full. (The Sync icon shouldn't spin forever in that case, though.)
    • Original "Loading items..." issue: Please submit another startup debug log if this happens again.
  • @seabad: You should let us know if you're still having any of these problems in beta 78, available now.
  • I will keep my eye out, thanks for the heads up! Things have generally been working fine on the previous beta, after I closed a good number of open pdf tabs.
