Open Office Integration

Since upgrading to the newest version of Zotero (2.0b7.4) and installing the latest Open Office Integration (3.0a5), I can't get the Open office integration to work. I had no problems prior to this. When I click on Tools-Adds-On-Open office Integration-Preferences-Reinstall, it says Zotero was successfully installed. When I open Open Office, the toolbar is there. When I click on any button on the Zotero toolbar, "Zotero OpenOffice Integration could not communicate with OpenOffice.org because the Java UNO runtime directory specified in the Zotero OpenOffice Integration preferences does not contain a "ridl.jar" file.
See the Zotero word processor plugin troubleshooting page for information on how to locate the appropriate directory.Firefox could not load the component required to communicate with your word processor. Please ensure that the appropriate Firefox extension is installed, then try again." It does the same thing on both of our Ubuntu lab computers.
I've worked with many different versions of both Zotero and Open Office integration and I've never had this before. I went to the troubleshooting page and I have Java. I can't find ridl.jar in my files, though.
Any ideas for fixing this? Thank you!!!

try some of the suggestions towards the bottom - I would suggest starting with the last post that suggests a purge and then reinstall of JRE
  • I've tried that forum and several others... I've purged and reinstalled java several times to no available. I've installed it from several websites as well as the manual install. I've changed directory names and still ridl.jar never can be found and the Open Office integration does not work.
  • It's hard to guess what you have and haven't done, if you want help you'll need to be as precise and as inclusive as you can be

So, for example, do you have the folder
    /usr/lib/openoffice/basis-link/ure-link/share/java
on your computer? What does it contain?

When you say "java" - you are referring to the sun java and not the open source one that comes regularly with ubuntu? i.e. you have actually executed
    sudo apt-get remove --purge sun-java6-bin sun-java6-jre
    sudo apt-get install sun-java6-plugin
  • Thanks for your suggestions.

I purged whatever java was on my computer and tried both of the downloads suggested in the word processor integration troubleshooting page. I changed the UNO directory several times with each of these Java versions.

And yes, I executed the sudo apt-get remove ... and sudo apt-get install sun-java6-plugin and again changed the Java UNO directory several times.

I have folder /usr/lib/openoffice/basis-link/ure-link/share/java There is nothing in it. And yes, I've changed the Java UNO directory to that to no avail.

Every time I've uninstalled the integration plugin from Open Office and reinstalled it.

I wish I could un-update my computer and go back to the Zotero/Open office integration plug-in that worked instantly. I've tried for 2 days to get this to work...
  • sorry, I don't know then. Maybe Simon can try to help?
    You're running Open Office 3.1.1 I assume?

    So if you type
    locate ridl.jar
in the terminal you don't get anything? That seems to indicate something wrong with java - my understanding is that ridl.jar is not a Zotero file. Hard to say how to troubleshoot that, though...
nothing at either of those two locations?
    /usr/lib/ure/share/java/
    /usr/share/java/openoffice/
    ?
  • Try
    sudo apt-get install --reinstall ure
  • adamsmith and Simon- thank you!!!! It works now!!!!
