Beta 7: stuck on "loading items"

Error ID: 2034197533

I've just transitioned to a new computer (Macbook M2 chip, fresh install, no data migration) and recently installed Zotero 7 on both my old and new computer. I logged in to Zotero on the new computer to enable syncing, but since then the app has been stuck on "loading items" for a few hours now. The app works and syncs fine on my old computer, but not the new one.

Tried uninstalling and reverting back to Zotero 6, but this did not make a difference.

I thought it was a file size issue (~2GB of documents), so I copied the contents of Users/[username]/Zotero from my old computer to the new computer, since that appears to be the local directory for synced pdfs. Didn't make a difference.

Tried deleting prefs.js while Zotero is closed to reset the library (tip from a 2018 discussion board), but no luck.

[JavaScript Error: "OperationError: Could not move temporary file(/Users/[…]/Library/Application Support/Zotero/Profiles/pltt3elz.default/treePrefs.json.tmp) to destination(/Users/[…]/Library/Application Support/Zotero/Profiles/pltt3elz.default/treePrefs.json)"]

[JavaScript Error: "NotAllowedError: Could not remove the file at /Users/[…]/Library/Caches/Zotero/Profiles/pltt3elz.default/ShutdownDuration.json"]
You're getting a bunch of errors suggesting that there's a problem writing to your Zotero profile directory. You're saying you didn't copy anything from the other computer?

Are you running any unusual security/system software?

I would try closing Zotero, deleting /Users/[…]/Library/Application Support/Zotero/Profiles, and letting it recreate that at startup, and see what happens.

(It sounds like you know how to get there, but you can hold down Option when clicking the Go menu in Finder to access the Library folder.)
  • I deleted Profiles and Zotero stopped running, so I tried again by deleting the xyz.default folder within it and that solved the problem!

I wasn't running any security software outside of Apple's settings pane.
