Not syncing because "creator name too long"

Hi everyone,

Full disclosure - I know nothing about coding or programming at all.

I am using Zotero desktop app for reference management. The desktop app works well (thanks!), but I have used it to store the search histories for several large literature reviews as I didn't have a better option at the time, and consequently have 36,000+ references stored. This isn't usually an issue, except I'm currently trying to sync to my online library so I can great a shared group file for a collaborative project.

However, whenever I try to sync, I get an error message. Usually it tells me "The creator name "insert reference here” in one of your items is too long to sync. Shorten the field and sync again".

I can go to that reference, remove the editor line, and it's good to try to sync again, but it happens again and again and again for more and more references. Is there a way to just remove this "editor" line from all of my references at once, so I can sync properly? Or do I have to manually do it for every single one that flags as a problem??

Thanks in advance,
Ash

You can select items and run the code from here in Tools → Developer → Run JavaScript to remove these long creators:

You can run on a single item first to test. If there are no creators that are too long, it won't change the item at all.

This is due to bad data from one of your sources — we're aware of Ovid generating bad data this way — and we have plans to discard this invalid data automatically in a future update.
  • !!! It worked! Thank you SO much! I've been trying to find a way to manually sort this out for ages, and never thought to ask in the forum. I assumed it was something dumb I was doing instead of a proper problem.

    Thank you again!
