In text citation goes wrong

When using APA style I noticed something rather unpractical and seemingly without a simple solution. Depending on whether a full first name is used, or only the initials the in text citation is different. Importantly this only seems to happen when the last name has suffixes in it, i.e. there are spaces in the last name.

Let me explain, using publication year 2009 for instance:

When using (last name, first name):
van den Hoogen, W.M.
the in text citation becomes (wrongly): (W.M. van den Hoogen, 2009)

When using (last name, first name):
van den Hoogen, Wouter M.
the in text citation becomes (rightly): (van den Hoogen, 2009)

When using (last name, first name):
vandenhoogen, W.M.
the in text citation becomes: (vandenHoogen, 2009)

I hope this is easily solvable as many Dutch authors do have suffixes in their family name.
  • While there are some issues with "van", "von" and the like, this is not one of them. Instead you are seeing:

It was indeed the case that the same author was listed in two different ways. Thanks for the reaction.

When fixing my database I did notice was that Zotero 'remembers' previously entered names although they don't occur in the database any more. Is there a way to delete these obsolete names from the databases 'memory' ?
  • I believe emptying your trash should work
  • Brilliant, I never would have thought of that!
