Recurrent Safari connector 'not responding"

Hi guys,

Happy new year!

Since macOS Sonoma, I noticed that the safari connector is frequently crashing. The activity monitor of macOS indicated indeed that the connector is not responding and when I click on the connector in Safari, no entry is created in Zotero app.

I have to kill the process in the activity monitor and disable/enable the connector to get it worked again.

I had the problem with Zotero 6 and the issue remains with Zotero 7 Beta.

It's easy to reproduce the issue as follows: start Zotero; close Zotero and restart it. After doing that, the connector is crashed.

Best,

  • Hi,

I did that but it did not help.

Moreover, I think I have a different problem. No missing or flickering save buttons but recurrent crashes of the extension process.

I experienced that in all my Macs running Sonoma: MacMini Intel, MacMini M2-Pro and MacBook Pro M1-Pro.

    Best,
  • I also get this issue, and it seems that Safari is also slower until I force shutdown of the Zotero Connector in the Activity Monitor.
  • Also been getting this issue (lately with the Zotero 7 Beta as well).
Occurs pretty frequently (a few times per day) on an M1 Max and an M3 Pro.
  • This bug with the Zotero connector process crashing has been occurring for me quite often, especially on my M1 and M3 machines (all running latest macOS). No flickering or flashing, just causes the entirety of Safari to hang.

Sometimes I feel like reinstalling the Zotero app makes this issue better for a short while as suggested above (https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/safari_compatibility#can_t_see_the_save_button_save_button_flickering) but I suspect that is more a result of me not enabling the plugin after reinstalling.

It often hangs so hard that even disabling the process in Activity Monitor often doesn't work fast enough and I just end up having to force quit Safari.
  • I have been experiencing the same problem (with M3)... eventually Safari freezes and only gets going again once I have done a force shutdown of the Zotero Connector in the Activity Window.

I wondered if it might be related to the fact that I had allowed the Connector access to ALL webpages? So I have restricted this setting now to "Ask" for each webpage and I will see how it goes.

Has anyone else found another work around? Or a reason for this happening in the first place?
    Many thanks

(@whitham.c: The Connector needs to be set to run on all webpages to function properly, and that almost certainly wouldn't affect this. This wouldn't happen from normal Connector functionality.)

The only cause of this we know of is the macOS bug that can break the extension after Zotero app updates:

    https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/safari_compatibility#can_t_see_the_save_button_save_button_flickering

If you're running the Zotero 7 beta, that might happen fairly often as we put out new beta releases.

If you've followed those steps and resolved the problem, and then it starts happening again without there being a recent Zotero app update, we'd want to know that and do further debugging.
  • @whitham.c Do you run any other safari extensions, or just the Zotero Connector? If so, what are they?
