File Not Found

edited February 11, 2024
Dear all,

Here's my Report ID: 1232166928

Here's the error message:

[error report removed — D.S.]

----

I cannot open most of the files on my Zotero and find this following message whenever I try to open them. I'm panicking because I'm working on my dissertation now.

"The attached file could not be found at the following path: [....]. It may have been moved or deleted outside of Zotero, or, if the file was added on another computer, it may not yet have been synced to zotero.org."

After that I checked my storage and most of the attached files are missing. I then tried to buy 20GB. I can sync new files just fine, but I am really desperate on how to recover the old files. Does this have something to do with me using Zotero in a new laptop? Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you!

  • Does this have something to do with me using Zotero in a new laptop?
Yes — the message means exactly what it says. You added the files on your old computer and were at your storage quota, so the files never synced to Zotero servers (as Zotero would've been warning you on every sync). Now that you've added a storage subscription, you need to sync the computer where the files actually exist.
  • Hi,

Thank you for the explanation! I am sorry for this dumb question. I just want to be sure. I think I have sync the computer since I can open the new files. Is there a way to retrieve the missing files or do I have to open them one by one and sync them again? Thank you.
  • You first need to get the old files synced online -- the only way to do that would be the old computer. If you don't have either the old computer or a back-up of its harddisk, the files just aren't there anymore, I'm afraid.
