Mac upgrade led to Zotero disappearing from Word

I recently upgraded my MacBook Pro 15-inch 2017 model from Catalina to Big Sur (11.7) and as I use Microsoft Word provided by my university, the Word version became 16.77. The first time I tried to use Zotero, I found that the Zotero button on the Word ribbon was gone. I have tried reinstalling the Zotero.dotm file, checking that my version of Zotero (6.0.30) has Mac integration turned on, restarting the Mac, Zotero, and Word, and even upgrading my Mac OS to Ventura (the Pro hardware evidently won't support Sonoma), and upgrading the Word for Mac version to 16.81. Nothing I have done has enable the Zotero button to show up in Word.
Is it possible that my university has tweaked their versions of Word so that you cannot do add-ons, including Zotero? I have run into this problem in the past with other software. I called my IT support but all they said to do was to upgrade to the latest version of everything. Any advice will be appreciated.
  • It is possible, but there could be other causes that are easier to fix.
Make sure to follow all the steps at https://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_troubleshooting (you have already done several correct things, but maybe not all of them).
  • @kdstephan: Yes, follow all the steps in Zotero Toolbar Doesn't Appear and the platform-specific steps linked from there, and if you're still having trouble, let us know exactly what you tried, in your own words, and what happened at each step.
  • I went back to the "Zotero Toolbar Doesn't Appear" and the last thing it lists to do for Mac is to look at the startup folder in Word, and if it isn't blank or the default, to reset it. Mine wasn't, and when I reset it everything started to work, and Zotero now shows up on the toolbar. Thanks for the prompt responses and I appreciate your encouraging advice.
