Cannot change reference format in-text

I have a word document where the in-text reference is currently [1] and I need to change it to [author, year]. I have tried several things under document Preference in Zotero and nothing works. I have tried switching between Chicago Manual of Style (note) to Chicago Manual of Style (author-date) along with other options. I have tried the radio buttons Footnotes / Endnotes. Nothing ever changes...the in-text reference stays as [1]. Please help.
  • What happens if you place the cursor in that citation and press Add/Edit Citation in the Zotero tab?
  • I get the add/edit Citation dialog box. But I have basically no options available. The word document was created by my student so I do not have all their references in my Zotero library.
  • Do you see citations in the citation dialog? If not, see Existing Citations Not Detected.
  • There are no citations in the citation dialog. I suspect the student did not follow the correct procedure when they had posted the document to a google drive share point for all authors to collaborate on. I do not see any path forward using Zotero. The fields are still active with correct codes, but I can't see any way to recreate the bibliography.
  • What do you mean by "The fields are still active with correct codes"? If that's actually the case in the technical meaning of that phrase, it should be possible to work with that document and get a bibliography created.
  • When clicking on a reference - for example [1] - I can right click and edit field and get a field dialog box with - for example: ADDIN EN.CITE Badshah2019382[4]38238217Badshah, HuzeifaPosada, FranciscoMuncrief, Rachel</contribut

And in the references at the back of the document they are also in grey and I can also right click and edit field and I get: ADDIN EN.REFLIST

But I do not know how to get the bibliography created.
  • Those citations were added by Endnote, not Zotero
  • Truly Sorry. I had asked my students to use Zotero and assumed that they did.
  • No worries, happens surprisingly often (as in -- we get this once every couple of months). Zotero field codes start with ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM
