Zotero Won't Switch from Chicago Style to APA 7 Style- Please HELP

I recently downloaded Zotero on a new machine and it appears locked in Chicago style for citations and references. In Word I went to Zotero - Document preferences- APA 7th edition, then Ok. Then I opened the desk version of Zotero, clicked update, and tried to make an in-text citation. There was no change. I did it with the online version and used Google doc and it still did not switch to APA 7. I closed the program and opened it again, and still no change. I checked for updates and my program is updated already. I don't know what else to do.

Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

  • I'm very confused by your description. If you set the citation style in the Document Preferences in Word, you'd then cite using the "Add Citation" button, also in Word -- it's not clear if you're actually doing that? And if so, what does an example citation look like?

Thanks for responding adamsmith. I did exactly what you described in my word document. When that did not work, I tried the same procedure online using a google doc. It still used the Chicago style citation.

    APA 7 Style: (Papadopoulos, 2003)

Chicago Style: Papadopoulos, “Cooperative Forms of Governance.”

I did this after going into Document Preferences to switch from Chicago style to APA 7 as recommended on other websites. My program appears to be stuck in this one citation style.
  • When you click on the citation in Word, does it turn grey? If so, could you take a screenshot of the Zotero Document preferences window in Word and paste it here?
  • But where are you actually creating the citation? Your screenshot shows a blank Word document.
  • Thank you for responding dstillman. Here are some other screenshots. To get the citation from my Zotero desktop app, I clicked on Edit -> copy citation -> paste it at the end of the sentence. It keeps giving me Chicago style citations instead of APA 7.

  • Right, but that's not right. Why don't you click "Add Citation" in Word (screenshot is broken for some reason)
  • To change the citation style, I went to Edit -> Preferences and clicked on APA 7th Edition -> ok. I repeated the process to copy citation, and it appears to be stuck in Chicago Style.

  • No, again, you're moving all over the place and confusing where citation styles are set. Please read very closely and follow the instructions (which are what I wrote in my first post and you said you did, but doesn't seem to have done):
    1. In Word, in the Zotero Document Preferences, set the citation style to APA 7, as you have in your first screenshot
    2. Still in Word Click on "Add/Edit Citation" and select the item(s) from your Zotero library you want to cite in the pop-up dialog.

At no point in time will you actually go to the Zotero Desktop tool in this process.
  • OK, I did it. Thank you very much adamsmith. I have been using the old version of Zotero and I would just select the reference, click add citation and it was in the paper without a popup window appearing. So, this is new. Thanks again for your patience and guidance!
  • The general principle of this has been the same since the beginning of Zotero; you may just be used to the classic add citation dialog that looks more like the ZOtero library. You still would have needed to use the add citation button, though.
