Sync error in new computer (Report ID:364590009)

edited October 2, 2023
Hi All–

I am not able to sync Zotero in a new computer; it gives me the "Your connection is likely being monitored, and Zotero has not been configured to trust the intermediate server" or sometimes only a connection timeout. I have the software installed in three other computers, which synchronize without issues.

I am using Zotero desktop with firefox in a Windows 10 system.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am a long-standing user of Zotero. My library contains around 3,500 items and no PDF files associated.

Log follows below:

-----
[JavaScript Error: "api.zotero.org:443 uses an invalid security certificate.

The certificate is not trusted because it is self-signed.
The certificate is only valid for ingress.local

Error code: SEC_ERROR_UNKNOWN_ISSUER
"]

[JavaScript Error: "Your connection is likely being monitored, and Zotero has not been configured to trust the intermediate server.

[additional output removed — D.S.]

Many thanks!

  • That message means what it says. See SSL Certificate Error.
  • Thanks, I've followed the troubleshooting steps, alas there is no security software and no WebDAV elements in my setup. Surprisingly, I accidentally found that using my VPN service seems to solve the problem.

  • It doesn't have anything to do with WebDAV. But if you're getting this, something on your computer or network — e.g., a proxy server — is intercepting your connection to Zotero servers.
  • Thank you. Yes, I understand that it cannot be WebDAV. It is puzzling. I cannot identify anything I installed that could be intercepting the connection. I think I will stay on my VPN as long as I use Zotero (and otherwise).

I am not using a proxy anywhere in my network, either.

I appreciate your time and support.
  • You can check the site certificate info for https://api.zotero.org from your browser (which may or may not be routed the same way, depending on your system proxy settings).
  • Just did it. Looks OK. Only mentions Amazon and no strange intermediate steps I can recognize.
  • Oh, sorry, it's right there in the error message:
The certificate is not trusted because it is self-signed.
The certificate is only valid for ingress.local
Looks like that might be Kubernetes-related. It's not from us. If you don't know what that's from, you should definitely figure it out.
  • Ok. Thanks for picking that up. I will try to see what is causing this. Thanks again for coming back to me so quickly.
  • @sergio.rey I had the same issue, this is fixed in Zotero 7 beta.
  • Thanks @julienroyd. I will give it a try. I wanted to mention that this problem disappears if I use a VPN, so the culprit might be in my ISP.
