Citations not refreshing, have underline

I am having trouble inserting new citations into my documents - its only 35 pages. Word either crashes or the citation is inserted with an underline. I have disabled automatic refresh and have restarted word and zotero. It is happening on my mac and windows on my work computer.
  • Yes I have done that and it still does not work. It is happening when I open a new word doc and enter one citation.

I'm not sure what "that" is referring to? The page is explaining that you'd get citations with dashed underlines if automatic citation updates are disabled — Zotero adds the dashed underline to tell you that the citation isn't necessarily in its final form. Clicking Refresh should update all citations and the bibliography to their final form and remove the underlines, until you insert another citation.

"Automatically update citations" is enabled by default, so you wouldn't get citations with dashed underlines in a new, empty document.
  • Clicking refresh is not working - The citations with the underlines remain and the document is not updating. I had seen that page and read the instructions so now I am asking what else I can do?
  • Can you explain exactly what you're doing in a new, empty document that's not working?

In a larger document, depending on the platform, refreshing could easily take a little while, so you may just not be waiting long enough. You also might have modified the citations manually in the document, which could cause them not to be updated.
