Some notes on image-handling

Zotero 6.0.30 Images in notes seem to be stored locally in the storage-directory with the name "impage.png" (or whatever the extension is). If there is more than one image in a note a new subfolder is created for each. When an image is deleted the folder and the file for the deleted image are kept. Only when the note is deleted and cleansed from trash its file is also deleted.
On exporting notes as markdown its images are not exported. Somewhere it was announced that because of the difficulties involved this would be optional in a future version.
  • Could you clarify what exactly is the problem?
  • I was looking for a way to identify image files in the storage folder but have not yet found a way to do this. I just wanted to document what I found out so far on how Zotero handles images.
  • Zotero manages the files in the data directory — you shouldn’t need to worry about it.

If you add an image to a note and then delete it, the image may remain in the data directory for a while to enable you to undo the change. If you switch to another note, images that are no longer used in the note should be removed. In some cases it might be possible to quit Zotero without the image being deleted, but it will then be cleaned up the next time you view the note and switch away from it.
  • Thank you for the clarification.
