Vancouver-Superscript-Spaceless style needed

Hi everybody

Many medical journals cite Vancouver citations without any space between two numbers. For example instead of citing: "1, 2" they cite: "1,2"

Although I have edited Vancouver-superscript style for my own use, since I don't know SVN yet, may I ask other guys here to do this favor and kindly create and upload the Vancouver-superscript-spaceless (or any other fitting name) to the repository?

Thank you very much in advance :)
Yours very truly
Vahid Rakhshan
  • why don't we just upload it under the relevant journals' name? I think yet another style named Vancouver is just going to add confusion - I think the whole collection of Harvard styles is not helping e.g.
If you have made the style anyway, post it somewhere on the internet and I can upload it.

Many journals use this and there are numerous relevant journals. Its name in my opinion needs to be self-explanatory; which may help the user to find it easier through page search or search engines. But a journal-specific name may mislead users who don't know that specific journal's style, but are searching for the "exact" style for other journals.

Although brackets and parenthesis are fully accepted in Vancouver style, there must be no spaces between the delimiter and the next citation according to the following references. The correct form of Vancouver style for in-text citations, seems to be the space-less format (regardless brackets or being in superscript format) and even the official Vancouver style in the Zotero repository should be double-checked as well:
    http://www.griffith.edu.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0018/107181/referencing-guide-vancouver.pdf
    http://www.computing.surrey.ac.uk/teaching/2006-07/csm10/Vancouver_format.pdf
    http://www.akademik.unsri.ac.id/download/journal/files/rui/475-oaj-unsri.pdf

    Therefore, while these citations: "1,2" "[1,2]" "(1,2)" are correct, these are incorrect: "1, 2" "[1, 2]" "(1, 2)"

Besides, I have seen text books that have used brackets in superscript format! But again without spaces after delimiters. Eventually, please note that none of the above references recognize semicolon as the delimiter for in-text citation. Maybe Zotero's official Vancouver style really needs reconsideration.

ps. These references add in-text citation format guidelines to the exactly copied bibliography information, available from this address: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/uniform_requirements.html

I uploaded three styles to Rapidshare.com and would be so grateful if you kindly put them onto the repository. Again please note that these are not journal-specific and all are only Vancouver styles.
All sent styles use comma (not semicolon), between two in-text citations as was referenced.

    1. Vancouver-superscript that doesn't add a space after delimiter:

    2. Vancouver style without spaces, with brackets around the citation:
    http://rapidshare.com/files/299314722/vancouver-brackets-spaceless.csl.xml

and 3. Vancouver style with parenthesis and without space:

Thank you very much dear Adam. :)
  • does that mean the existing Vancouver style is incorrect? Then we should change that. I'll take a look and potentially just replace existing Vancouver with your styles.

Thank you very much for your prompt response and kind reconsideration.
  • Oh wow - I had forgotten how bad the existing Vancouver style was. I have now updated and corrected it - fixing numerous other problems on the way and adding vahids three corrected citation sections.

Dan: The new Vancouver needs to get pushed asap - the old one has a whole bunch of flaws.

Thank you very much Adam. That was so kind of you. This is why I like Zotero: a highly responsive community (as well as other nice features).

For polishing the bibliography part of Vancouver style (if needed), references above completely describe Vancouver bibliography as well.
  • yes, thank you, I noticed. There is a very good "official" version of Vancouver online for the bibliography section, which is also linked to from inside the style. This is what I based the changes on and I believe it should look a lot more polished.

You may have to install the Vancouver style from the repository (not the one towards the top, but the one all the way to the bottom that has /dev at the end) for it to take effect.

Thank you very much dear Adam.

Although these suit me best, however, wasn't it possible to indicate the "parenthesis" in the Vancouver[/dev] title to be more explanatory?

ps. Those references had copied the exact official Pubmed Vancouver style contents that you kindly used to polish the bibliography (as was quoted in their first page). I am saying this that those who read the discussion trust the above pdf references as well.

well - I wanted the style to replace the old Vancouver style that had parentheses - that's why I left the title as is. As the two others are in the repository, which also has the preview option, I don't think this is a big issue.

    Done.
  • Hi
I saw that you had posted this three styles:
    1. Vancouver-superscript that doesn't add a space after delimiter:
    2. Vancouver style without spaces, with brackets around the citation:
    3. Vancouver style with parenthesis and without space

But the links dosen't work anymore. Could you send It again? I realy need them.
    Thank you in advance.
  • they are all in the repository.

None of the existing Vancouver styles adds a space after the delimiter.

The friends here later uploaded those styles to the repository under relevant names (see the conversations here for more information).
  • Is there a Vancouver style with in text superscript citations in parentheses, not brackets? I can't seem to find it. If someone can add this to the repository, that would be amazing! Thank you.
  • A journal. Public Health Nutrition
  • there is a style for Public Health Nutrition on zotero.org/styles
it does put superscript numbers in parentheses. If there are other problems with it, please list them in a new thread.
  • The closest style I've found so far in Zotero is for the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research. But it has errors. The commas and dashes within the parentheses are not super-scripted and the end parenthesis ) is also not super-scripted.
  • I've fixed the JBMR style, too. But do look at the existing Public Health Nutrition style and let us know how it goes.
  • Wonderful! I love zotero.
