Dotted line under references newly imported from Zotero into footnote in Word

I think I pressed something by accident and suddenly whenever I add a new citation from Zotero in my word document, the reference is imported with a dotted line underneath it and Zotero does not remember that I have already cited that work and therefore don't need all the bibliographic details again. Please can anyone suggest what I can do to resolve this? Thank you.
  • Thank you. I haven't managed to sort this yet but am working on it...
  • There's nothing to sort — what you're seeing is perfectly normal when "Automatically update citations" is disabled. When you click Refresh, the citations and bibliography will be updated.
  • Unfortunately I'm not finding that it is working. I am clicking Refresh in the Zotero tab at the top of the Word document and it is registering that I have edited some of the citations and asking whether I wish to retain my changes but the underlined citations are still underlined and when I put other references in they are underlined too.
  • If you edited an underlined citation directly in the document and chose to keep the edit, the underline wouldn't go away and you'd have to remove it yourself using Word's formatting tools or replace the citation.

You should almost never edit citations directly in the document. Fix the data in Zotero or customize the citation properly.

And new citations will always be underlined as long as "Automatically update citations" is disabled — that's how the feature works.
  • Thank you for your help.
  • I've now clearly pressed the right buttons in the right order and it's working. I'm very grateful to you.
