Style request for 'Wetlands'

Hi,

I would like to request help for the following style- I tried Xbib but couldn't figure it out, although the changes are few.

Similar style: Mycological Research

Differences from similar style:

Journal article
Volume number should Not be in bold

Web resource
Date accesed need to be at the end

General
Year should be within a parenthesis
No period at end of citations
List of authors should not end in comma
Names of books, journals, newspaper should Not be italicized

Link to style guide:

Thank you!
  • I don't really get this: the style they post has nothing to do with what they publish int their journal:

    General
Year should be within a parenthesis
No period at end of citations

    both of those don't apply.
initials are with period in the journal etc. I'm not sure what to do about this - seems like a poorly managed journal - maybe you can contact them?

  • The journal had been published by the Society of Wetland Scientists up to September 2009, now it will be published by Springer, hence the new instructions.

  • and they changed the citation style entirely? That seems implausible - would you mind contacting the editor about this? I'm not little inclined to write a citation style that's not actually useful. Plus, the little information they provide in the link above is nowhere close to enough to write a somewhat comprehensive style.
  • Can you tell me what other information besides that indicated in :

    http://www.springer.com/life+sci/ecology/journal/13157?detailsPage=contentItemPage&CIPageCounter=760809#anchor1

is necessary for a comprehensive style?, then I can include it in the email to the editor

    Thanks!
  • it's always best to have a sample article, but as a minimum I'd need to know:
    1. How do in text citations look
    2. What are the rules for et al - both in text and in the bibliography
    3. Is the line break between URL and accessed date that's in the instructions part of the style?
    4. Are journal issue numbers never included, or just left out for journals with continuous pagination?
    5. Is the doi always included where available?
    6. Is there really no formatting, such as italics, in the bibliography?

Please note in your mail to the editor that the guidelines differ in multiple ways from recent published articles and ascertain if that is intended.
  • Hi,

So the answer from the journal editor is that yes, the citation style will change entirely as the journal is now co-published between the society and Springer in 2010.

    on your other questions:
    1. I didn't get a response on what the in-text citations should look like since Springer doesn't specify, I asked the editor again and I'm waiting for his response.
    2. in the references all authors should ideally be listed in the bibliography
    3. Yes
    4. No, journal issue numbers are not included (unless the journal has no volume)
    5. Yes
    6. No
  • OK, thanks, I'll get to that sometime in the next couple of days.

    Go here
    http://gist.github.com/220013
download using the Raw link on the top right, install by dragging to an open FF window.

Let me know if everything looks good.
What an ugly style - why would they do that? The old style was wonderful, very clear and structured. This one is an ugly mess. And they can't even have the information on their site consistent. Once it's doi: in lowercase, once it's capitalized, they don't tell you what to do in text etc.
    edit: good to go now.
  • Hi, yes I am not sure why change the syle because the publisher is changing...

I finally got this from the editor (not much) on how the in-text citations will look

(Freitas 1991; Santos et al. 1997; De Oliveira et al. 1999)

Sorry, not usre If I am doing this right. If I drag the tar or tar.gz files to Firefox it just directs me to unpack them, if I drag the unpacked style it just prompts me to open it? doesn't seem to install it...

    Thanks
  • download using the Raw link on the top right. It's next to "embed".
Do not use the download button.
  • the style is in the repository - please report any problems here
  • Hi, Thanks!

I did notice that the style 'forces' the titles to sentence style (small caps). This is a problem because the titles commonly have proper names, so I would have to go and fix each one individually (rather than have the titles in small caps in the database which I usually do, and directly fix there any that don't).
  • ah yes, that was me trying to be clever.
I'll change it as soon as I get the chance, will let you know here, but the style should update automatically about every 24hs anyway.
  • Ok, I just finished looking through it and noticed one more thing,

for web resources the accessed date does come up in a new line but with a huge indent

Weller MW (1999) Wetland birds. Cambridge University Press. http://books.google.com/books?id=m50cTdPavlwC.
    Accessed 3 Jun 2009

    Thanks!
  • Sorry found another one

    for dissertations
Steen P (1999) Biogenic sedimentary structures in Estero MorĂșa, a microtidal flat in the Northern Gulf of California, Sonora, Mexico.

    It should be

Steen P (1999) Biogenic sedimentary structures in Estero MorĂșa, a microtidal flat in the Northern Gulf of California, Sonora, Mexico. Dissertation, The University of Arizona
  • OK, the first two are fixed, the last one will have to wait a little. Thanks for reporting back, though.
  • ok, thesis should work, too.
