Encountered an error when syncing PDF on Mac.

"I have a dictionary that's larger than 2GB, and I'm trying to sync it using a self-hosted WebDAV server. I've tested the synchronization on my iPad, and it works fine there, but I can't sync it to my Mac. After checking the disk read and write activity in the background, I noticed that Zotero was trying to write a huge amount of data. I suspect that every sync attempt is trying to download this large file, but for some reason, it's not successful. However, when I manually copied this dictionary to the 'GE***' folder, the abnormal read and write activity disappeared. My Zotero version is the latest beta, version 7."
"Should there be any error messages or guidance on how to address such issues? Are there any recommended steps to take?"
  • [JavaScript Error: "Error: The file "/Users/[…]/Zotero/storage/GEQFCMJP/[…].pdf" is too large" {file: "chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/pdfWorker/manager.js" line: 295}]
Could you not sync it, or could you not open it? This suggests that the file already exists on your computer, but Zotero wasn't able to process it when you tried to open it in the PDF reader. But it's possible this error is from after you copied the file manually.

For a sync error, we'd want to see a Debug ID (different from a Report ID) for a sync that produced the error.

I'm not sure we've tested PDFs that large in the reader. If you're able to share the file privately somehow, you can email a link to support@zotero.org with a link to this thread and we can take a look.

"After deleting the files inside the folder, specifically when the PDF icons at the end become faded, I attempted to open it, which caused increased background disk write activity but still couldn't sync and open. Every click results in a 2GB write increase. However, I didn't observe increased disk writes when clicking the sync button in the upper right corner. The files were downloaded from zlibrary using this link: https://zh.zlibrary-china.se/book/24996635/6e51d2. I processed them with OCR, which increased the file size. Would it be possible to replicate the issue, and if needed, I can try sending it via email? Please note that my upload speed is slow, so it might be a bit cumbersome."

If you download GEQFCMJP.zip from your WebDAV server, can you unzip it? Is it a valid ZIP file?
  • I checked the modification date of the server-side file, and it was yesterday. After downloading, I was able to unzip and open it. Today, when I tested it on my iPad, I could also directly open it
  • I think we’d have to see the ZIP file. Any chance you can make that available somehow and send a link to support@zotero.org?
  • Sent, please see if it's working now.
