Same author, same year ... In-text citations not using "et al" followed by "a" and "b"

Hi everyone. I am very frustrated right now as I am trying to format the references in a document, but two of them don't seem to be cooperating. These are the two citations I am referencing:

Cooper Brathwaite, A., Versailles, D., Juüdi-Hope, D., Coppin, M., Jefferies, K., Bradley, R., Campbell, R., Garraway, C., Obewu, O., LaRonde-Ogilvie, C., Sinclair, D., Groom, B., & Grinspun, D. (2022). Tackling discrimination and systemic racism in academic and workplace settings. Nursing Inquiry, 29(4), e12485. https://doi.org/10.1111/nin.12485

Cooper Brathwaite, A., Versailles, D., Juüdi-Hope, D., Coppin, M., Jefferies, K., Bradley, R., Campbell, R., Garraway, C., Obewu, O., LaRonde-Ogilvie, C., Sinclair, D., Groom, B., Punia, H., & Grinspun, D. (2022). Black nurses in action: A social movement to end racism and discrimination. Nursing Inquiry, 29(1), e12482. https://doi.org/10.1111/nin.12482

However, when I insert an in-text citation using the Zotero Word plugin, I get the following:

(Cooper Brathwaite, Versailles, Juüdi-Hope, Coppin, Jefferies, Bradley, Campbell, Garraway, Obewu, LaRonde-Ogilvie, Sinclair, Groom, Punia, et al., 2022)

(Cooper Brathwaite, Versailles, Juüdi-Hope, Coppin, Jefferies, Bradley, Campbell, Garraway, Obewu, LaRonde-Ogilvie, Sinclair, Groom, & Grinspun, 2022)

Notice that one has et al. and the other one doesn't. The list of authors is almost the same except for one author's name.

What should I do? I tried switching from APA to another citation style and back, deleting and re-adding the references to Zotero, restrating Zotero and Word ... Please help!!

The author lists are not identical — Punia is in the second list but not the first.

This is correct APA style to add names when the author lists are not identical. Adding a, b, c, etc is only done when the author lists are identical (or specifically identical up until 20 authors). This is rule 8.18 in the APA manual.

This is a rather unusual case of applying this rule because the difference in author lists happens after so many authors.
  • @bwiernik thank you so much! I talked with a librarian and they came to the same conclusion. Glad its been solved!
