Cannot add or update citations in large document

My document has 1226 citations. Operating system: Ubunto 20.04. Libre Office: 6.4.7.2. Zotero app: 6.0.27. Zotero plugin for LO Writer: 6.0.3.

I cannot add new citations, or edit existing ones. I've already tried to tunr off auto-updates of citations. This can't solve the problem, because at the the end I have to make update and it proceeds infinitely.

I've tried to chop my document into sections in seperate files using File -> Send -> Create master document. I was able to add, edit and update citations in those files, but after merging them again into one big document the problem returned.

I've tried in another way, by creating empty document and selecting from LO menu Insert -> Text from a file, and then choosing my document. The same problem - infinite update.

I've made debug when trying to turn on auto-apdates. Here are bottom lines with error code:

  • You should start by installing a current version of LibreOffice 7.5 or 7.6 rather than a version from January 2021.
  • Could you run the current version of LibreOffice? I know they have an older version packaged with Ubuntu (especially the LTS releases), but you're missing three years of updates in LO, including countless bug fixes, some Zotero related.

    As for this:
I've tried to chop my document into sections in seperate files using File -> Send -> Create master document. I was able to add, edit and update citations in those files, but after merging them again into one big document the problem returned.
This works for *all* individual sections? The error message you posted does sound like there might be a specific issue with an individual citation (in which case step 11 in https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/debugging_broken_documents would apply)

Finally, you've let this run for a while -- say 30mins -- to make sure it's actually broken and not just slow?
  • Good news.

I've installed newest version of LibreOffice, but... it wasn't the cause of the problem. The real cause was, that the "tracing changes" was enabled (presumably accidentally - by pressing wrong key combination). It made a lot of mess when I've moved some quotation. After disabling this option everything came back to normal, but I had to re-enable auto-updates. And that was real pain in the a..., because it lasted almost for 3 hours (!!!). I was debuging Zoter for the whole time, so I could see what the progress bar mean.

The was no need to update LO, but anyway... I will stay with the newest version.
  • Enabling debug output also slows down Zotero, so you could likely still get this a bit faster, but it is a massive document so it's not like it'd be done in minutes either way. I'm glad you have it working now.
