Import from EndnoteX9

I have been using Endnote X9 and am trying to import the library to Zotero. In Endnote, I go to the "All References" folder and select all. Then I follow the instructions I found here:

https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/endnote_import

but I get a pop-up that reads "The selected file is not in a supported format." Please advise
  • You can try resetting translators from the Advanced → Files and Folders pane of the Zotero preferences, but if that doesn't help, you're likely missing a step and trying to import the wrong thing.

If you provide a Debug ID for the import attempt, we might be able to say a little more, but the instructions haven't changed in a long time and definitely work.
  • What file extension does the exported file from Endnote?
  • Thanks -- that's the right format, but see dstillman's questions above.
  • Here's the debug ID: D1854537583

I had three results: 1) It imported a single file 2) It imported a single file, but a different one 3) most often it read that the selected file format is not supported (though it is definitely xml and I definitely selected my entire library, i.e. unchecked the "Export Selected References" in Endnote and tried to keep that box checked and simply selected all of my references.

  • XML Parsing Error: not well-formed
There's something invalid about the file. If you don't mind sharing it, you can email just the XML file to support@zotero.org with a link to this thread. Otherwise you'd need to debug yourself with an XML validator.
  • Will do.

    Thanks
  • Yeah, so EndNote just produced an invalid XML file — it has two invalid characters in one entry. I've sent you back a corrected file, but this is an EndNote bug.

(If someone else encounters this, the fix would be to use an XML validator to find the invalid characters.)
  • Can you please re-send the file? I don't see it in my email, including my junk folder.

The email was delivered on our end and didn't bounce. I'm afraid that's all we can tell you. Resending isn't going to be any different. If you can't find the email, you'll need to fix the file yourself or get someone to do so, or you can contact EndNote support and ask them to fix their exported file. There's no problem in Zotero here, so I'm afraid we can't help further.
