citing fields from extra — force display in bibliography

I'd like to be able to cite custom fields from extra — like Original Date, but with text specified case by case (in this case, "Updated" date) — and have them display in the Bibliography entry. Is there a way to do this without editing the CSL? It's a long shot, but I'm hoping there's some secret catch-all syntax to append custom text to an entry...

    Definitely not without editing CSL, no. In general, it's fragile to use anything that's not an actual CSL variable from the Extra field, though it will currently work (but your CSL will be flagged as invalid)

    If you’re using APA style, the CSL ‘references’ or ‘status’ variables can be used as a sort of catch-all for displaying additional text
