add citations to Word docx without using plug-in

I have an R program that will take data from an Excel workbook and automatically generate a corresponding report in Microsoft Word containing tables summarizing the data that can be dropped into a larger Word report. The program also inserts EndNote temporary citations where needed so that once my Word report has been generated, EndNote can format the citations with one click. Is it possible to replicate this workflow with Zotero?
  • Zotero supports similar curly-bracket unformatted citations as Endnote (ie for citing without needing the word processor plugin). It's a fast way to write/cite. Albeit Zotero's unformatted citations are a little more ambiguous than Endnote's because Zotero does not assign/expose unique reference numbers to each item like Endnote does (which are used in Endnote's unformatted citations).

And final formatting of the Zotero citations has to be done within the desktop app (on a saved RTF file), not within the plugin. So not with a 'single click'.

  • For a more reliable form of the RTF Scan feature, use the ODF Scan plugin
  • Thanks for the suggestion of RTF Scan, but the need to resolve ambiguous citations manually is a deal breaker. Any other options?
