Privacy respecting browsers with Zotero?

I'd like to use a browser that is modified to maintain privacy (and security) better than stock Firefox and Chrome. I'm concerned about fingerprinting, cross-site tracking and profiling by data aggregators. I don't want my research work associated with everything else in my life.

I use a dedicated VM (Debian) for this work. I use a VPN and socks proxy, everything is by the clearnet.

I used to use SecBrowser which was fantastic. Really low fingerprint scores, even with the Zotero Connector that worked great. Unfortunately that browser was withdrawn a few months ago and now getting back into this work I need a new solution.

I can't get Tor Browser working for the clearnet - which is all I want - and I don't even know if the Connector would work, so I will put that aside.

Does anyone have a working solution? Maybe using Arkenfox.js or privacytools. js on Firefox?

I have tried Librewolf, which is a well-maintained privacy-hardened fork of Firefox. The Connector installs fine but does nothing. It seems it just can't communicate with the standalone Zotero. (127.0.0.1/8 and ::1 aren't proxied by default). Is there somewhere/something I can whitelist?
  • Hi mods - would edit post but its not released from approval yet.

Discovered that Librewolf can play well* with Zotero, even while using a proxy.

Despite Librewolf promising that 127.0.0.1/8 will always be excluded from its manual proxy settings by default, it seems that's not true.

Users have to manually whitelist 127.0.0.1:23119 in about:preferences > network settings > proxy settings.

Perhaps we can leave these posts for others if they find it helpful?

    * entirely subjective, but the saving process from the Connector to the stand-alone app seems significantly longer than on previous browsers. Still functional though.
  • @lunar-regolith, I just wanted to give you a big thanks for taking the time to post this solution. It still works in LibreWolf as of Sep 2023.
