Feature request: Auto rename attatchment when save item from browser.

When I save item from browser, if the attatchment can be obtained, the attatchment will auto download and add under the item in zotero, but the name is "Full Text PDF". While when manually download the attatchment and manually add attatchment the name will be auto rename to parrent metadata.

Hope auto rename to parrent metadata when auto save attatchment from browser.

zotero version: 6.0.27
platform: mac 13.5.2
  • What you are seeing in the central pane of Zotero after expanding an item is the "attachment title", which is different from the "filename":
    Attachment Title vs. Filename
Attachments have two separate names: the attachment title shown in the items list and the filename of the file on disk. The parent item row already displays metadata such as the title and authors, so there's no need to repeat it by showing the filename underneath it, and the attachment title often contains additional information about the source of the file (e.g., “Accepted Version” or “Submitted Version” for open-access files). You can view the filename in the right-hand pane after clicking on the attachment or in the filesystem via right-click → Show File.

Could you explain what information you would like to see in the central pane below the parent item and why this would be useful for your workflow?
Considering this difference between the "attachment title" and the "filename", what information would you like to see in each of them as default naming convention, for the primary attachment and the secondary attachments, in the different ways to add them? The main issue here is that it is not obvious which information to use for these two names as default behaviour.
  • Those of us who use the Zotfile plugin are used to its default behaviour of renaming the downloaded PDF (according to your preferred renaming rules) and *also* giving the 'attachment title' that you see in the middle pane the same name as the file. Some people strongly prefer this behaviour while others strongly prefer that the filename and title should not be the same.

IIRC it has been indicated by Zotero developers that the title=filename behaviour may be an option in a future version of Zotero.

You can of course manually change the attachment title in the right pane currently (with or without also changing the filename). I often use that to add a suffix to both the (Zotfile-modified) filename and title (eg PREPRINT VERSION, ANNOTATED VERSION, GOOGLE-TRANSLATED VERSION, SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIAL).
