File organiser?

Hi there,

I am currently considering whether my research project should switch to Zotero, over the old version of Mendeley we are using (pre-Elsevier take-over). One function that our research team currently really likes about Mendeley is the File Organiser, which allows us to name all files in your Mendeley folder on our desktop under the same format (Author_Title_Year_Publisher, for example). I can't seem to find this function on Zotero, but maybe I haven't been looking well enough. Could anyone here maybe tell me whether Zotero offers a similar option?

Thanks in advance!
  • I have also moved from Mendeley Desktop to Zotero and I am very happy with the move.
You can find some information regarding file renaming on this page: https://www.zotero.org/support/file_renaming
  • Thank you for the quick and helpful response! So if I'm correct, file renaming is currently impossible but will be possible under Zotero 7?
  • No, a basic version has been part of Zotero since forever and a more advanced version in line to what is described in the above link is available using the Zotfile add-on

The default file renaming functionalities in Zotero 6 are described in the Hidden Preferences in attachmentRenameFormatString.

Zotero 7 has been under beta for more than 3 months already, currently at version 7.0.0-beta.39. So you should not have much issues to use it for perliminary testing to see what it will look like.

You can already start using Zotero 6 for important work. But I would recommend sticking with the default renaming rule in there until the stable release of Zotero 7. The Zotfile plugin is very nice, but it is not actively developped or maintained anymore and it can interfere with the importing process from Mendeley.
